Director of External Relations
As the Director of External Relations at Literacy Trust, Phylisa oversees communications and community and government partnerships. She believes deeply in the role that public schools play in preparing all students for a lifetime of civic participation and that quality literacy instruction is crucial. To this end, it is her job to ensure that Literacy Trust participates in discussions about universal literacy and the importance of capacity-building in schools, and to advocate for uptake of the program to various bodies.
Previously, Phylisa spent eight years with an international learning company at their locations in the U.S.A. and U.K., and opened their learning centers in Melbourne, Australia and Tokyo, Japan. Ultimately she managed sales, communications, and learning center teams, but her earlier years were spent working directly with students with autism and dyslexia. Her experience in communications, storytelling, and advocacy includes a congressional campaign and a state government secretariat. She has a BA in Social Sciences from California State University San Marcos and a Masters in Public Policy from King's College in London.
When not at Literacy Trust, Phylisa dabbles in freelance food journalism and is a voracious reader. She's often found in her backyard: Prospect Park.
