Services

  • Reading Rescue® delivers an ongoing professional development program for teachers, paraprofessionals, and administrators that equips a school to provide the most intensive form of intervention effectively and economically.


    Over the three years of an initial adoption, Reading Rescue consultants deliver training and coaching for tutors and for the teacher serving as a school's Reading Rescue Coordinator (aka Literacy Coach) and provide training and support for administrators.  Tutors receive 12 days of intensive training in reading, assessments, and tutoring over the three years. Reading Rescue Coordinators have an optional and additional 15 days of training available for them.  Unlimited technical assistance is provided to schools.

    YEAR ONE
    Initial Training – Days 1 & 2 (for all tutors)
    •    Screening to identify Rescue students
    •    Individual Assessments and Easing In
    Initial Training – Days 3 & 4 (for all tutors)
    •    Analyzing assessments
    •    Phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension
    •    The Rescue lesson
    First Follow-up Training – Day 5 (for all tutors)
    •    How to build fluency
    •    Word study to develop phonological awareness and phonics
    •    Graduation criteria and Easing Out
    Second Follow-up Training – Day 6 (for all tutors)
    •    Tutor conferences
    •    Writing to develop phonological awareness, phonics, and comprehension
    •    Effective prompting to develop reading strategies
    Optional Advanced Institute – 5 Days (usually held in New York City)
    •    Advanced training for Literacy Coaches

    (Optional because some schools cannot afford to send personnel out-of-state for additional training)


    YEAR TWO
    Third Follow-up Training – Day 7 (for all tutors)
    •    Word recognition: phonological awareness, phonics, and orthographic structure of language
    Coordinators As Coaches – Day 8 (for all tutors)
    •    Literacy Coach Training: Monitoring for fidelity; observing and coaching tutors
    Fourth Follow-up Training – Day 9 (for all tutors)
    •    Literacy development in children
    •    Prompting for comprehension
    •    Written record for instructional planning
    Quality Assurance Visit – Day 10 (for all tutors)
    •    Tutor observations with feedback
    •    Review tutor products for fidelity
    Optional Advanced Institute – 5 Days
    •    Advanced training for Literacy Coaches

    YEAR THREE
    Fifth Follow-up Training – Day 11 (for all tutors)
    •    Text structure and comprehension
    Quality Assurance Visit – Day 12 (for all tutors)
    •    Tutor observations with feedback
    •    Review tutor products for fidelity
    Optional Advanced Institute – 5 Days
    •    Advanced training for Literacy Coaches

    YEAR FOUR AND BEYOND

    Services needed to maintain Reading Rescue within a school beyond the initial three-year adoption contract are negotiate on a per school basis with The Literacy Trust, Inc.

Reading Rescue® is:

  • Research-based staff development for teachers and paraprofessionals covering extensive topics in reading and diagnosis
  • An intensive intervention model that provides
    • identification (screening) assessments
    • one-on-one skilled, research-based tutoring
    • extensive diagnostic pre-assessments that pin point students' strengths and instructional needs
    • on-going monitoring of student progress
    • extensive post-assessments to document student progress and grade-level performance
  • A partnership with schools providing unlimited technical support for administrators and tutors
